Divine Twine

For the past several months I drive my sister to her singing/voice lessons which in the part of town that has a good amount of quaint small town locally owned businesses, right at the far end of old town. If I forget to bring something to read and the weather isn’t being user friendly, I always have the option of taking a nice stroll around the few city blocks and enjoying the sights, the smell and the whole “warm and fuzzy” feeling that one gets when walking in the part of town that is just reeking of history, generations after generations of families who worked so hard to make a name for them selves in town and have managed to hold onto their small piece of the world through the good times as well as the bad times.

One of my favorite shops is all about crafts with various twines and paper goods along with packaging and other interesting  baking tools and goods that today’s bakers can just go wild using on their baked goods! I have never been considered a good baker, but I’m not necessarily known for being the best either. I used to have a blast in the kitchen when my daughter was much younger and she actually wanted to spend time with me in the kitchen. Those days are long gone!

My all time favorite was to make and bake various types of Christmas cookies with her to give out to friends, neighbors, co workers and family members. We would even send a batch to school for her to give to her teacher as a holiday gift. We would use the recipe that my grandfather used from back in the day when he still lived in London as a boy. I have made sure that this recipe will never get lost and that it will forever be considered Grand Dad’s Special Christmas Cookies!

Looking around downtown, it seems the adults have grabbed this weekend for Halloween parties. I have been seeing people wearing costumes every night since last Thursday night. It is fun. I just find it remarkable that a holiday for children is being celebrated so early in the week along with all the long 3-day weekend by adults. I guess wanting to dress up and act silly isn’t just for kids.

Stay At Home Mom to Entrepreneur

I’ve been a SAHM (Stay At Home Mom) for five years now, and I’m grateful for every minute I’ve been able to spend with my kids. No amount of work outside the home could ever fulfill me in the way that being a mom has. As my children are getting a little older now, though, I recently decided to start pursuing my dream of owning my own cupcake business and running it out of my home so that I can still spend quality time with my little ones. Let me tell you, it’s been hectic, frustrating and fraught with doubts from time to time, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding!

The truth is, with the right equipment and a gung-ho attitude, I’m certain that any SAHM could replicate what I’ve been doing. Once I decided to take the plunge, I knew I needed to keep my overhead low while still maintaining a professional look to my kitchen and to my products. I used the budget-friendly Culinary Depot to outfit my kitchen with the cake-baking accessories I needed, and I used word of mouth and free social media to start marketing my business. I’ve been so pleased by the support I’ve gotten, especially from other moms. I’m starting small with catering birthday parties and christenings, but I can already see the potential my business has for the future.

Planning a Successful Baby Shower

When someone you love is expecting you would move mountains to make her shower a special day. Luckily you don’t have to – a successful baby shower can be pretty spectacular without a whole lot of fuss, provided you stay organized and calm. Keep these tips in mind if you’re planning a baby shower.

Who, What, Where, When

You’ll certainly want to check in with your mom-to-be – it’s her party, after all, and if she has a theme in mind or a color scheme, she should be accommodated. Decide if you’ll be hosting alone or with help and set a budget.

Next, create a guest list with your VIM (Very Important Mom), collecting full names and addresses.

Decide where you’ll be having the event, whether in someone’s home, in a restaurant or in some other space, like a banquet hall, fire hall, VFW or church gathering center. That will also probably help you set the date, as you’ll have to work around your venue’s schedule, but in general, you should try to start planning at least a month and a half in advance.

Invitations and Registry

Take some time to fill out the invitations and let the mom-to-be set up registries at any stores she likes (Target and Babies R Us are popular choices). Including a little card with this information on it in the invitations is a great way to ensure that Mom gets the things she needs. If you really want to make the event special and you have a knack for crafting, consider hand-making the invitations, so that they’re utterly personal keepsakes on their own.

Mailing, Menu and More

Send out the invitations about a month before the party date. Now is the fun part for most – planning the menu. If you’re at a restaurant or somewhere that caters, you’ll simply be choosing which foods to offer. If you’re in someone’s home, decide what you’d like to offer and divvy up the cooking.

Now is also a good time to start planning your decorations, party favors and games. Consider a festive and colorful diaper cake as a surprise center piece for the almost-mommy. Make sure the edible cake is ordered as well.

The Final Details

As the big day draws near, make sure you dot your Is and cross your Ts. About a week before the shower, confirm reservations, call up stragglers who haven’t yet RSVPed and make a list of all the last-minute details that will no doubt pop up (writing it up and keeping it close is a good way to stay organized). A few days before you can decorate and set up tables a chairs; the day before get all your cooking done and check-in with the guest of honor to see how she’s feeling.

Finally, the day of, keep your calm, know that you were organized and everything will fall into place and focus on celebrating the wonderful and life-changing joy with your loved one.
